About the Holy Month
Why Ramadan matters to Muslims worldwide.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the most blessed month of the year. During these thirty days, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset β no food, no drink, and no intentional acts that break the fast β as an act of worship, self-discipline, and closeness to Allah.
It is also the month in which the Quran was revealed, which makes Ramadan a month of extra worship: daily taraweeh prayers after Isha, long nights of dua and Quran recitation, and increased charity. The fast is broken each evening at iftar, usually with dates, and the pre-dawn meal before the fast begins is called suhoor.
Hidden within the last ten nights is Laylatul Qadr β the Night of Decree, described in the Quran as "better than a thousand months" (97:3). Muslims seek it especially on the odd nights, with prayer, remembrance, and sincere dua.
